Website Promotion from Scratch
I have built many websites to date. All of them have been built from the ground up. This isn’t to say that I did all the coding in all cases. Lately I tend to go the easy route and built a site out of open source scripts which I piece together and customize to get my desired results. No, I mean that the website is promoted from the ground up. I never have, nor will I likely, purchased a domain which already receives traffic. I also have not ever purchased traffic or back links of any kind. There are ways to do it completely from scratch if you are willing to spend the time. This is my hobby as well as my work so I hope it will help you whether it is for hobby or business.
The first thing you have to do, and this is key for website promotion, is submit your website to all the major search engines. For some reason many people forget that. At some point they will find it and begin to crawl it, but that could take years with all the sites out there. After it is submitted, build an site map. A site map is an important part of website promotion because it is an XML extract that tells the search engines when you have posted new material and when material has been updated so that it can crawl those pages first, rather than on a routine checkup. Many open source scripts include an automatic site map generator or have a plugin. If you choose to do it manually, it is tedious, but it can be done and is very necessary.
The next thing to do is build back links. There are so many ways to do this for website promotion. Get creative. You are looking for any way to get a hyperlink leading to your site on other websites. The bigger and more reputable the site, the better the link. You can get low quality links from social bookmarking sites. Directories are good. I like to run a blog like this one to promote my site. I like this method because I get to talk about what I am doing and help others out while I am at it. Plus, I get a little ad revenue from it which is nice too. One last comment on back links, you have to-have to get follow links. You can find this out by looking at the source code of the page you want your link on. Where you find the <a href=”YOUR URL”> if there is a line in the alligators that says, ‘link rel=”nofollow”‘ then the back link is worthless to the search engines and you shouldn’t waste your time. You can usually look at someone else’s link to see if it is a nofollow.
Key wording your pages is also very important to website promotion. Here is a great resource for someone who wants to get into website promotion by keywording their pages. There are also some great design tips in here for people who run ad revenue sites.
Lastly, website promotion through search engine optimization like we talked about here can be terrible complicated. Here are some articles that can give you a lot of insight into how the industry works so you can understand it better.
