How to Have a Blog

A blog is a great way to get information out there on the internet or alternatively, to obtain information on the internet. The ‘Blogosphere’ is like an internet sub-culture for those who want to circulate content on a different level than traditional search engine based content. Bloggers tend toward the social networking aspects of the internet in addition to the informational and entertainment purposes. At any rate, it can be fun for anyone to know how to have a blog.

There are many reasons that someone might want to have a blog. I will cover four of the biggest reasons that many people blog. These will come primarily out of my personal experience. This information should help anyone considering a blog to make the decision and find out if they have a true desire for it.

Fun. Many people I know operate a blog where they talk about whatever is happening in their lives that they believe to be interesting. Where this isn’t a giant revenue generating mechanism, it accomplishes the goal of being entertaining. In my experience, the high from knowing that other people are receiving some sort of benefit from your work makes it well worth the effort alone.

Promotion. Businesses and individual entrepreneurs have taken to learning the ways of the blogosphere as a way of attracting people to their business’ website. This can prove to be incredibly useful as long as ethical blogging is done. If it is done strictly for purposes of search engine optimization, then it contributes nothing to the community. On the contrary, it is perfectly ethical to promote a product given that the blog itself offers informational benefit.

Revenue. Many people have found that monetizing their personal blogs or structured (topical) blogs opens up ways of making money that they had never considered. If you can gain a following blogging, you can supplement your income or even live off of your following and blog for a living. Granted, you have to be interesting and actually post valid information in order to do this. You also have to know the industry which is done through experience alone. I relate it a bit to being a radio DJ in that sense.

Helpfulness. Many people take to blogging from the perspective of being helpful. There are a number of un-monetized blogs out there which provide professional knowledge to the blogosphere because they simply want to share their knowledge with other. This is a noble cause.

Whatever your reason for wanting to know how to have a blog, the important thing to understand is that you must above all things be contributing to the community and secondarily, you can obtain personal benefit whether that is monetary or simple gratification.
